John McDiarmid of Fort Worth Texas defeated Lefty Bryan of Chattanooga Tennessee in a gruelling five set final to capture the men's singles championship of the Mid Dixie tournament. The match lasted two hours and forty five minutes with scores 7 5 4 6 6 3 3 6 6 4. Julia Pickens and Doc Barr won the mixed doubles 6 1 6 3. Wilmer Hines and Harley Shuford took the men's doubles 6 3 6 2 6 4.
A horse named Gusto today won the $50,000 American derby at Washington Park Chicago before about 30,000 spectators. The victory surprised the crowd as the outsider horse upset rivals in the event.

Laddie a Collie from Sunny Bank Kennels Pompton N J was named Best in Show by Edward Armstrong and Mrs Marshall Freeman. Judges included Mrs Freeman Mr Armstrong Dr A C Jones and Dr W A Hornaday. Winners span many breeds with Best of Breed and Best Litter honors awarded to numerous handlers and owners.
The Commonwealth nine defeated Melrose 13 to 5 yesterday afternoon extending its winning streak. Pitcher Parrish earned the win with six strikeouts while Wyrick led at the plate with three base hits.
