In Goldsboro North Carolina State Highway Patrolman T Moore was killed after stopping a car with one headlight. An unidentified Black man died later in a ditch. Patrolman W D Kinsey reported hearing shots after Moore stepped onto the running board.
John H. Davison of Ashaway R I was chosen president of the International Brotherhood of Magicians at the 12th annual convention's business meeting. The 1938 convention was awarded to Cincinnati Ohio during the morning session.
A trial of seven men charged with aiding and abetting an assault on H B Willoughby at a Textile Workers meeting was postponed to 2 p m Monday after counsel requested time to question hundreds of witnesses. Defendants included Osborne Lee and labor organizer Myles Horton with bond set at 25 to 100 dollars. The article notes a small picket line at Mansfield mill and 103 workers returning to duty.
Washington June 18 A federal tax investigator named Charles Laughton the actor and others today typified those avoiding income taxes through foreign operations.

The Boston wool market shuts down after a sale of about 499 bales stalls trading. Willard Bigelow, secretary of the National and Boston wool trades associations, says demand is nil with wool not moving out of the city, though new mills seem stocked and can ship from other points.

Greta Garbo settles a $10,500 suit brought by David Shratter, a former Berlin film producer, claiming payment on a 1924 loan. The case was dismissed with settlement details not disclosed.
Senator Robert F. Wagner attacked employers who refuse written contracts with unions as a violation of the national relations act. He told the New York Times that such actions show anti social industrial policy and a determination not to accord workers representatives dignity and standing in business dealings.
The objective is to promote farm ownership by tenants sharecroppers and farm laborers. Federal census shows 2,865,000 tenants or 42 percent of farm population in 1935 with annual growth about 40,600. A committee bill would authorize loans to approved tenants to purchase farms with a 30 year term.

W B Hutchins, 32, of route one High Point, was injured in a collision reported in Raleigh. William Perry, 18, a farm hand, confessed to fatally wounding Mrs W T Hamlett at her home near Pittsboro after being captured near Danville following pursuit by North Carolina and Virginia officers. The arrest came as investigators noted the youth had been drinking prior to the incident.
Raleigh June 18 Highway commission approved the low bid from A. H. Guion Co of Charlotte to build four overhead bridges and retaining walls in High Point grade crossing elimination. The bid near 308,975 dollars was lowered slightly by accepting alternates and will be sent to the federal Public Roads Bureau for final approval.
Leaton D. Foster of High Point and Everett E. Russell of Thomasville were bound over to the December term of federal court after arraignment on violating the Federal Revenue Act. Federal agents seized a five gallon can of liquor in Russell's car near Climax. Bond set at 500 dollars for Russell and 300 dollars for Foster.

Seven ships remained at anchor in Norfolk and Richmond as negotiations began in Baltimore and New York to end a National Maritime Union strike. The City of Norfolk was delayed discharging cargo but expected to sail to Baltimore today. NMU agent Richard Graham confirmed it as one of the affected ships. IMMC officials denied knowledge of a strike aboard the vessel.

Gaston Doumergue, former president and premier of France, died today in his native village after retiring to vineyards near Paris. Known as Papa Doumergue, he became president in 1924 as the first Protestant to hold the post under the Third Republic. he died at 67, having married Jeanne Grave just 12 days before leaving the Elysee in 1931.
Blonde Mrs Helennow, in Suffolk County jail, pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the death of her year old daughter. She faces 13 years to life with possible parole after 13 years and is to be sentenced Monday in Riverhead.
Amelia Earhart began the next leg of her round the world flight from Calcutta toward Akyab Burma but bad weather forced a return. The monoplane landed at 12 34 PM after a 400 mile leg across Bengal, then took off again toward Ba Sram and returned to Akyab within two hours.
June 18 Mayor ER. N. Riddle announced he had abandoned plans to circulate a petition calling a Northampton County election.
Paris June 18 Premier Leon Blum announced he would push his bid for virtual control of French fiscal affairs to the senate. The finance committee opposed the move as the government seeks decree power to shape financial policy after passage in the lower house. Deputies backed the decree measure 347 to 261 with an amendment excluding control of foreign exchange. The senate considered the bill amid the clash.
