Four Lowell sewer workers died in a manhole after entering to save companions overcome by sewer gas. The incident occurred as a rescue attempt by fellow workers faced with gas buildup in the sewer system.
President Hoover appealed to communities along the Canadian border to assist the treasury in stopping international criminals and firearms misuse. He cited the deaths of Donahue, Fitzgerald, and Roark during a gas-filled rescue at a tannery manhole, with Keene critically injured. He urged orderly legal action and noted later questions about the four fatalities.

The Pan American Airways craft carried 47 pounds of mail and three company officials. Juan T Trippe president James H Eaton traffic manager and Andre A Priester chief engineer were aboard along with the pilot and radio operator. The flight called at Curaçao on the way to Venezuela.
I C Tretman of Suffolk resigns from the anti-Smith executive committee in Roanoke citing a distasteful telegram to Mrs. Herbert Hoover. The action follows a district meeting amid debate on anti-Smith stand on race relations and party leadership in Virginia.
The Texas House adopted the senate concurrent resolution rebuking Mrs Herbert Hoover for receiving a Negro congressman's wife at a White House tea. The vote was 99 to 10.
Emmett Spicer of Nashville Tennessee, state champion, continued to scorch the course at the Southern Amateur Championship at Belle Meade Country Club Nashville. He negotiated the first nine holes in par 34 as qualifying rounds continued.
Arthur Schreiber of Portland Maine who stowed away on the Yellow Bird and flew to Spain will be sent home on Thursday aboard either the Leviathan or the President Harding.
The dirigible Los Angeles landed at Lakehurst naval air station after a night voyage over New Jersey. It flew over Trenton Atlantic City and along the coast creating a striking display for observers.
Paris June 18 The Yellow Bird crew will be received by the chamber of deputies the senate and the Hotel de Ville tomorrow in a ceremony that marks official recognition of their trans Atlantic flight. Air Minister Laurentynac will preside at a reception this day the minister had previously opposed such recognition and only relented at the last moment. The gesture does not alter the stance against non water craft trans Atlantic attempts.
In Buchanan Georgia constable Luke Bellenger is held without bond after a coroner's jury found he shot Grady Phillips a sawmill hand following a traffic stop. Phillips died at Cedartown hospital. Authorities issued warrants for murder and manslaughter as the shooting occurred in the Corinth district near Buchanan.
In Washington the Democratic Republican independent group hints it may rewrite the tariff measure in the Senate to restrict revisions to agricultural products. The Borah resolution to discard the House bill narrowly failed 39 to 38. The Senate plans a recess through August 19 as both chambers wrap up work on the farm relief act and related appropriations.
P Dewey Ward is jailed in Boone North Carolina on a murder charge for killing his landlord Ralph Eggers with an axe. Ward claims self defense with Eggers allegedly attacking him. Only a small child as a witness and Mrs Eggers testified at the coroner’s inquest that the child cried out that Ward was cutting daddy with an axe. Ward says Eggers tried to attack him first and he struck back.
In London Charles G. Dawes will address the Pilgrims' Club while Ramsay MacDonald speaks at Lossiemouth on disarmament talks. Both speeches hint at a new era of Anglo American cooperation with global implications.
A joint resolution proposes amending the state constitution to permit Wisconsin to manufacture liquor. The measure was introduced in the state senate by Bernard Gettleman of Milwaukee.
In Folkestone England boats and tugs combed the English channel for the bodies of three women missing after the City of Ottawa airliner crashed off Dungeness. The death toll rose to seven with Americans Adolph E Meister and others named in casualty list. The liner in service since 1926 had made 269000 miles and yesterday’s voyage would have been its thousandth crossing.
Franklin North Carolina reported a fatal auto wreck near the North Carolina Georgia line about 11 p.m. Monday. Early Mashburn about 40 died instantly while Fred Blaine is expected to die and Newt Cunningham was injured. the Ford sedan plunged off a 59 foot bank and Lew Cunningham remained at the wheel.
President Hoover announced the United States will not sign the Young reparations plan from Paris. Since the U S is not a party, Congress need not approve the plan. Congress must decide only authorization to cut American Rhine army cost claims.
In Reno on a November 18 session, Mrs Henrietta Louise MacArthur was granted a divorce from Major General Douglas MacArthur without alimony after waiving all claims to support. She alleged failure to provide for common needs. the defendant offered no case.
DETROIT June 11 AP charges that a U S coast guard cutter fired a machine gun at a speedboat on the Detroit river injuring no one but shattering a wind shield. Chief James Proctor of Sandwich Ontario sent the report to Ottawa as a protest to External Affairs.
Promoter Pyle faced a municipal court ruling over a $500 judgment tied to the transcontinental bunion derby. Reported claims by runners and troupe members to the state labor bureau followed inquiries by city prosecutor Lloyd S. Nix. Greene of Altadena won $500 in a separate suit for a $400 overdue note and interest.
A two mile triumphal procession marked Asheville's second annual rhododendron festival with over 2000 participants from 70 organizations. Uniformed units led the parade followed by grotesques dragons hunters on horseback and a tally-ho amid cheering crowds.
