Lightning strikes road surface on a Kansas highway

A thunderstorm near Lexington Kansas caused a bolt to strike highway 66 two miles north of town knocking a three by eighteen inch section of top asphalt from the surface with no damage to the concrete base. Observers note this as the first recorded instance of a lightning strike on the hard highway surface.

Vacation Bible School Closes at State Street Church

Lexington June 18 A daily vacation Bible school at State Street Methodist Protestant closed with a music and story program by children and young women. Fatal clash ends in sheriff killed and suspect fatally shot in cabin

In Paris Tennessee on June 18 a Black man named Joseph Upchurch shot Sheriff T P Caldwell during an arrest attempt and was then fatally wounded by a posse. A coroner's inquest will determine the double fatality after a crowd gathered near the cabin. Caldwell died at the scene. Upchurch lay dead inside the cabin with a lit pipe nearby.
