Kenneth A. Gibson age 38 won Newark New Jersey mayoral race, defeating incumbent Hugh J. Addonizio amid corruption trials. Gibson pledged to end black white tensions and reconciliation, while white voting areas aided his runoff victory. City politics remain divided with several indicted officials, including Addonizio and Mafia-linked figures.
