Admiral King in aging health recalls a storied career
In Bethesda Maryland on June 16 Admiral Ernest J. King aged 78 is described as frail yet vivid in memory. The former World War II fleet admiral who led U S naval operations after Pearl Harbor suffered a stroke in 1947 and now spends much time in the naval hospital with his wife nearby. King is portrayed as tough and fiercely devoted to victory with a sharp mind even in retirement. He earned two Distinguished Service Medals for salvage operations and commanded at New London during the 1925 8 51 disaster and again after Provincetown. Born in Lorain Ohio he entered the Naval Academy in 1897, married Martha Rankin Egerton in 1905 and had six daughters and a son who also became a naval officer.
