More Troops Called To Curb Strikers
CHICAGO June 16 Federal official El lis T Longenecker said more troops would be available Monday morning for military escort driving or hand duties as trucking lines were seized at 12 01 am to avert a strike in a dispute with the War Labor Board over wages and hours. He cited an incomplete survey showing 2% per cent of drivers from the Independent Chicago Truck Drivers local 705 and 24 cent from the AFL International Brotherhood of Teamsters local 705 at work. He asked employers for the name address and age of every man on the payroll who does not perform normal duties Monday. The move follows rising violence and a partial Chicago trucking tieup despite police and infantry presence. Longenecker said ODT general counsel Claire Roddewig was en route to Chicago to liaise with the FBI which was ordered to investigate violations of the Smith Connally anti strike act.
