The Vatican excommunicated all persons connected with the expulsion of Msgr. Manuel Tato from Argentina, targeting leaders including President Juan D. Peron and top government figures. The decree, issued by the Consistorial Congregation and published in L Osservatore Romano, denounces actions that harmed church rights and forced Tato and an associate to depart Argentina.
A practice torpedo exploded on the Royal Navy submarine Sidon at Portland harbor, sinking the vessel and trapping 13 crew. Seven hours later the Admiralty declared all hope abandoned for three officers and ten enlisted men, with eight others injured.
