City Seeks $75 Million for Coastal Home Defense Gear
Ray Tucker reports La Guardia told a House Appropriations panel the cost to arm key eastern and western coastal cities with home defense equipment could reach 75 million dollars. An initial 900000 for 1941 1942 administrative expenses tops the current request as factories face heavy defense orders. Fire fighting gear dominates the planned outlay, with 145 million needed for New York City and similar ratios for other cities. A federalized purchasing system is urged to prevent bid wars and ensure uniform equipment. The mayor cautions heavy buying is unlikely soon due to industrial demand and defense work.
