Cop Freed In Death Of Hood In Oakland

Oakland police Patrolman Oliver A. Brown was cleared of blame in the Lake Merritt lovers lane killing of Ernest Shaw 19. Chief Edward Tothman said Brown acted in self defense after being attacked with a penknife. Mrs Esther Pecora 25 was absolved as Brown’s companion in the car.

Local Youth Shot In Fight Near Cafe and Quarry

Colin Austin a 19 year old resident of Central Boulevard was shot early today during an arranged youth fight starting at a cafe on East Green Street and moving to a rock quarry off Kivett Drive. The bullet pierced his right thigh and authorities expect surgery at High Point Memorial Hospital. Police have not yet named the shooter.

Beirut battles and rebel drive shake Lebanon capital

A day of heavy fighting in Beirut pitted government forces against rebels trying to topple Premier Camille Chamoun. The clash centered in the Zarif district near the Moslem quarter, with attempts to seize the presidential palace and government house. Casualties were heavy, and fighting spread to Tripoli as U.N. observers prepared for a foothold.

Heavy Winds Strike Two North Carolina Areas

The Associated Press reports heavy winds and driving rain lashed Greensboro and Goldsboro with gusts up to 76 mph.
