Police Officers Deserve Respect and Public Cooperation
In this Thomasville Scene column, Frank Warren urges respect for police officers and explains the risks they face when enforcing the law. He contrasts the badge with the daily dangers, noting officers must sometimes arrest or risk losing their badge. The piece blends commentary with a sidebar joke about a space garbage scenario and a short human-interest note about Betty Clodfelter winning a prize in a poetry column.

Unemployment Claims Dip Near Pre Recession Levels
The Labor Department reported unemployment claims for workers insured for benefits fell to 1,392,000 for the week ended May 30, a drop of 57,590. Compared with the pre recession week ending June 1, 1957 the figure shows improvement, with most states reporting declines except Connecticut and Oklahoma. Initial claims by newly laid off workers rose 15,200 to 211,300 for the week ended June 6, mainly due to seasonal lulls in apparel and food processing. Despite the rise, initial claims remain below 1958 and 1957 levels for similar weeks.
