Washington reports recount how presidential daughters have sparked gifts from rulers and nations. Tea set pieces from France, a Gobelin tapestry from France, mosaics from Italy, and a blue and gold snuff box from King Edward VII illustrate the scale. Domestic figures urged restraint over gifts such as a silver punchbowl and odd tokens from private citizens. The 1913 Jesse Wilson necklace episode revived debate on proper gifts for first families.
