Guilford County officials brace for budget requests as commissioners review the overall county program for the upcoming fiscal year starting July 1. Tax department projections show a gap between anticipated new valuation revenue and the demands from department heads for funding.
Three Saturday wrecks produced three injuries all to drivers. Harriman Blizzard 53 of Beaucrest Avenue was hurt and charged with failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Lena Stephens of Lake Forest Drive was injured in a two-vehicle crash on North Centennial. Eugene Profitt 66 of Lindsay Street was hurt and Mary Sturchart charged with failing to reduce speed. Dorothy Moore of East Washington Drive cited to court for hit and run. Franklin Roosevelt Howze 31 of Underhill Street charged with assault and battery on a female.
The spy Major John Andre, who arranged with Benedict Arnold for the surrender of West Point, was hanged at Tappan New York after his capture, ending the failed treason plot.
The YM YW swim program opens Monday with classes for all ages from pre school to advanced lifesaving. Recreational swimming runs 2 to 5 p m at the YWCA Monday to Saturday and 7 to 9 p m Fridays. YMCA boys open swim at 1 30 and 2 45 daily. Second sessions start July 11 and July 12 respectively with a planned third session in August.
