Hollywood June 11 Actress Jane Russell sprained her right ankle when she slid and fell while climbing out of a bathtub during a scene filmed at 20th Century Fox. The injury was painful but not serious.
A flaming Mercedes car leapt into the Le Mans crowd during the 24 hour race, killing at least 70 spectators and injuring about 75. Driver Pierre Levegh died, with many victims decapitated or mutilated. The disaster halted the event and stunned witnesses at the famed French circuit.
DETROIT June 11 General Motors aims to match Ford terms in a tentative CIO-Union contract offering a guaranteed wage plan. The UAW pressed GM to a Sunday midnight strike deadline with 350,000 workers at 119 plants facing walkout if no deal. Walter Reuther and John Livingston urged GM President Harlow Curtice to join bargaining.
Gov Allan Shivers of Texas addressed about 14 000 at a University of Southern California commencement. Police kept order as two weeks earlier students and faculty protested his selection citing segregation views. Shivers praised progress in Texas and said technology and national unity were reshaping America.
