Changes in North Carolina labor laws in 1931

The 1931 North Carolina general assembly enacted major labor reforms governing women and children employment. Key measures set 8 hours daily and 48 hours weekly for under 16s with exceptions, restricted women under 18 from night work, reorganized the labor department into a division of standards and inspections, and introduced a 55 hour cap with several exemptions and a joker clause for certain dependents. The laws also introduce stricter hazardous work prohibitions and allow newspaper carriers under 16 to work with limits, while repealing the fourth grade clause.
