In Algiers near the dockyards Moslem auxiliary policemen fired on Europeans. Three Europeans were killed and six wounded after the policemen claimed they were attacked. Two Europeans in a nearby truck were seized.
Two Danville youths Gerald Dunn and Charles Athey, 19 and, attempted three mile swim across Cape Fear River at Carolina Beach. Rescued by Capt. Wilbur Best after spending night on a sand bar, they were carried back to old Brunswick town with mosquito bites and a lesson learned.
President Kennedy calls critics from business and politics to join the government in boosting economic health. He rejects the view that deficits cause inflation and says government must partner with all sectors to maintain progress, noting that past party control did not prevent recessions.
The nation’s railroads mainly in the East consider raising passenger and freight rates to cover new wage and benefit costs for off-train workers. The unions accepted a White House board recommendation that would lift labor costs by about 105 million dollars, with potential 180 million if on-train workers settle similarly. A fogbound commuter train struck a school bus with more than 100 young children aboard near Buenos Aires, dragging the bus yards. Officials report 42 killed and about 80 injured, including a teacher. A girl among the survivors leaped from an open window as the crash occurred.
