Charlotte June 11 AP reports the North Carolina Merchants association directors say the state budget can be balanced without the three per cent sales tax or an ad valorem land tax.
A four hour Senate Agriculture Committee examination of Rexford Tugwell on his fitness for undersecretary of agriculture concluded. Tugwell denied forming a brain trust and the panel prepared to vote on reporting the nomination the next day.
Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt told Raleigh reporters that honesty is essential to push the New Deal forward. She spoke at Memorial Auditorium and later planned to open Duke University’s International Relations Institute in Durham. He cited that current armament outlays exceed 700 million dollars with Vinson bill adding a billion more and warned disarmament is being blocked by munitions makers. He noted 1928 Mediterranean cruiser voyages and sales to Turkey as part of the armaments trade.
Pittsburgh June 11 M F Tighe president of the Amalgamated Association of Iron Steel and Tin Workers says there is little merit in a government proposal for a three man board to settle steel disputes. He plans a June 14 Pittsburgh convention to decide on a strike and questions finding judges without steel ties to fairly judge working conditions and rights.
Greensboro June 11 Special Garland B Daniel High Point attorney and his client W J Wilkinson were placed on probation for two and five years respectively after federal charges of conspiracy to violate postal laws and unlawful possession of misdelivered bonds were resolved by nol pros for Daniel and a plea of guilty with amendment for Wilkinson. Daniel must restitution 200 to Beeson Hardware and monthly reports. Wilkinson must weekly payments totaling 200 to Beeson Hardware and 200 fine paid to the court, with mercy shown due to his wife's testimony and plea.
New York June 11 Sonny Hogg infielder recently promoted from Dayton was released an option to Richmond to make room for veteran pitcher Tom Zachary. The move vacates space on the Dodgers roster as Zachary joins the team on a new assignment in the Piedmont circuit.

Searchers found the wreckage of a Newark to Chicago airliner in the Catskills killing seven aboard. The day’s reports also detail a Trinidad discovery of another crash and a Pan American Grace Airways crash in Argentina killing three. CHAPEL HILL June 11 Ambassador Josephus Daniels urged UNC alumni that the nation needed experts and professors in public service to guide a New Deal era. He defended Roosevelt’s brain trust against critics and said the old methods failed to foresee the Smoot Hawley tariff consequences and the financial collapse. He noted few “dangerous professors” in government after a Washington visit. He argued scholars warned of policy flaws and the need to heed expert counsel to avert further crises.
