Heavy fighting persisted as 239 North Vietnamese were reported killed in dawn clashes near Laos border. U S forces with 101st Airborne backed by 167 sorties, amid light overall losses and a heavily mauled platoon. Buddhist protests pressure junta amid inflation rise and tax measures.
In London the seamen's union and the Trades Union Congress inner cabinet held a meeting. Leaders did not disclose their plan but hinted it would push for a new approach. Britain’s top union leaders had rejected pleas for support, signaling the union may be forced to negotiate.
Samuel H. Sheppard will be retried on a second degree murder charge in the 1954 bludgeon slaying of his wife Marilyn. He has served a murder conviction and has been free on bond since July 16 1964 while appealing claiming an unfair trial. The U S Supreme Court ruled 8-1 that he should be released or granted another trial within a reasonable time.

The body of a man tentatively identified as Robert Glenn Hendrix Sr. of High Point was found in City Lake. A girl alerted Larry Robbins at the City Lake Park pool. deputies and parks staff recovered the body about 10:30 a.m. A billfold, shoes, a 1961 Cadillac, and Hendrix’s business names tied him to the scene. The watch on the body stopped at 9:20.
Gov. William W. Scranton says he is retiring from politics not due to backstabbing by rivals or Ike. He disputes the notion of bitterness from 1964 and credits Eisenhower with encouragement, insisting the decision was his own. He, 48, remains focused on family as he ends public office plans.
CHAPEL HILL AP Seawell chairman of the governor's Law and Order Committee says the Ku Klux Klan operates in North Carolina in violation of state law. He spoke to about 300 law enforcement officers and warned there is no middle ground in enforcing the law. Meredith led a 130 strong March Against Fear march along U.S. 51 in Mississippi as King, en route to Chicago, left to tend to illness. James Meredith, 33, had covered 27 miles of the 225 mile trek from Memphis to Jackson when he was shot near Hernando, hoping to spur Black voters to register and vote. Aubrey James Norvell, 40, of Memphis, charged in the shooting, remains in custody as the project proceeds with King’s planned return.
