History note recalls the Savannah 117 years ago as the first vessel to use steam during the Atlantic crossing. Captain Moses Rogers steered from Savannah to Liverpool, with coal burned to heat the engine and paddle wheels turning as British ships watched. The voyage lasted about four weeks, 80 steam hours.
