The North Carolina Senate passed the revenue bill with Gov. Sanford's food tax proposal by a 42 6 vote to fund school improvements. The measure now goes to the House for debate. The Senate also approved bond measures for state institutions totaling about 70 million with around 61 million to be financed by a bond issue.
In Raleigh AP reports two bills to curb betting on athletics were introduced by Rep. Herb Hardy and other House members. One bans transmitting odds or strength estimates by phone or telegraph for athletic contests that could enable wagering. the other prohibits possession or transmission of handicap lists. Violations are felonies with 1 to 5 years' imprisonment and judge's discretion on fines.
Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson told editors the United States will not surrender Asia to communism without a fight. He said freedom in Asia is worth fighting for and the front line of freedom lies in Viet Nam, Thailand, and Pakistan. He urged steps to maintain freedom and warned against retreat to Honolulu or San Francisco.
In Raleigh the Senate approved a small loans regulation bill by voice vote on second reading but delayed third reading for weekend unity talks.
