George Stephenson, born June 9 1781 in Wylam England, rose from poverty to engineer inventor and founder of railways. He became a fireman at 17 then night school taught him English and math. He designed improved engines at Killingworth and patented a faster engine with Dodds. His Rocket reached 85 mph at a Liverpool and Manchester Railway trial. He later founded the first civil engineers society.
