German Prisoners Hoboes of Russia
London May 8 Correspondence The Associated Press reports German and Austrian prisoners in Russia have become idle wanderers with no will to work or fight. Some 50 prisoners at a station north of Vologda lounged on the platform as an American Red Cross mission toured the region. They lacked arms and wanted only to return after a general peace, while some considered organizing into bands a risk. They recalled from Russia years ago, subsisted on charity from villagers, and gratefully accepted old bread and chocolate from Americans. Several large camps in the far north have dissolved since the revolution due to food shortages and scurvy.
