At a news conference a government official announced a plan to form an expert advisory committee to review all available data on smoking and lung cancer. The panel will include experts from federal agencies, health groups, and the tobacco industry, with membership to be announced later.
Western North Carolina Conference reports show 3 560 new members last year bringing total to 264129 in 1 100 churches. Delegates heard that average yearly gains over 20 years run 2935 and peak was 6295 in 1946.
Gov. Sanford expressed support for a limited auto inspection program focusing on essential safety features like brakes. He noted mechanical failures cause about 21 percent of crashes and criticized previous overinclusive inspections. He urged civic groups to discuss the issue and help shape a workable plan for the next General Assembly.
The Massachusetts Democratic state party convention opens in Springfield with Edward Kennedy and Edward McCormack Jr. leading in delegate counts. Kennedy claims over 1,000 of 1,723 delegates, while McCormack cites just over 900 loyalists. The three day event includes credentials reports, a delegates dinner with Sen. Muskie, and balloting for endorsement Friday.
A late night crash on U S 29 70 near Greensboro killed three people and injured four others as two westbound cars sideswiped near the Asheboro Street overpass. James Summers Jr Walter Wilkinson and another unidentified victim died. Police identified James Saunders 23 Guilford and David Lee Saunders 16 Greensboro as injured with skull fracture and varying conditions. O W Morgan 38 Lexington drove the truck hit twice and escaped with minor damage.
Gov. Sanford announced North Carolina will not take part in the Levant Trade Fair in Bari Italy this summer. He cited insufficient state industry interest to exhibit and said the cancellation prioritizes a stronger North Carolina Trade Fair to be held in Charlotte in 1963.
In Raleigh Wake Superior Court jury selection continued for six men and two sign companies charged with influence peddling in state highway sign purchases. Key figures include Kidd Brewer Raleigh businessman, Robert A. Burch former State Highway Department engineer and his son Robert M. Burch.
Republicans in Congress approved a declaration of party principles for the 1962 elections. The 2500 word statement called for tax system overhaul and a new direction for public policy to defend freedom at home and abroad. It attacked Kennedy administration domestic and foreign policy and warned against erosion of freedom.
The USAF announced a new B52H Stratofortress was airborne seeking a 11 400 mile closed circuit world distance record without landing or refueling. Capt. William M Stevenson led the flight from Seymour Johnson AFB North Carolina with NA A observers aboard to certify the record.
