The first trial is set for Tuesday in Fort Wayne Indiana against Anaconda Wire and Cable Company and five officers for conspiring to defraud the government. Other trials include Clifford F. MacEvoy Company and five officers at Newark for housing project claims, Sondra Egg Products and partners in Syracuse for dried egg powder claims, and related indictments in Trenton.
Washington June 7 The bulk of John L. Lewis half a million coal miners returned to their pits under a fourth truce while dissension among southern operators signaled a new crisis. Lewis and aides held a brief meeting with operator representatives to map the next step in stalled talks. The War Labor Board gave no new instruction and a board official doubted formal steps would be issued, suggesting a resumption of talks without a WLB nod.

Detroit June 7 Army authorities sought the instigators of a racial strike at Packard Motor Car Co. R. J. Thomas president of the United Automobile Workers CIO said he possessed evidence that Klan agents promoted the strike and would submit it to the FBI and request a Senate civil liberties inquiry. He spoke at a National Association for the Advancement of Colored People meeting.
The Supreme Court set aside the conviction of Homer Lester Bartley alias Homer Brooks of Houston Texas for failing to keep a forwarding address for draft notices. Justice Reed wrote the 7 to 2 opinion noting a good faith chain of forwarding addresses satisfies the regulation. Chief Justice Stone and Justice Roberts dissented. Bartley had surrendered to the FBI after learning of the induction order and was jailed 60 days following Houston district court verdict.
