Six War Fraud Cases Go To Trial Soon

Six major war fraud cases will go to trial in federal courts this June from Kansas City to Newark. The first trial is set for Tuesday in Fort Wayne Indiana against Anaconda Wire and Cable Company and five officers for conspiring to defraud the government. Other trials include Clifford F. MacEvoy Company and five officers at Newark for housing project claims, Sondra Egg Products and partners in Syracuse for dried egg powder claims, and related indictments in Trenton.

Conviction Set Aside In Draft Case

The Supreme Court set aside the conviction of Homer Lester Bartley alias Homer Brooks of Houston Texas for failing to keep a forwarding address for draft notices. Justice Reed wrote the 7 to 2 opinion noting a good faith chain of forwarding addresses satisfies the regulation. Chief Justice Stone and Justice Roberts dissented. Bartley had surrendered to the FBI after learning of the induction order and was jailed 60 days following Houston district court verdict.
