Navy May Call Upon Draftees

Washington June 7 the selective service system may be aired to aid the navy in manning its fast growing auxiliary fleet and shore bases. A limited number of draftees would be used for service aboard converted merchant craft and at naval installations, while warships would generally retain full crews. Secretary Knox said six years voluntary enlistment is needed for training. Accelerated defense prep has boosted the auxiliary fleet, shore projects, and reserve calls. Volunteer enlistments continue at about 1000 to 1500 weekly as civilian work lures away draftees and re- enlistments have declined.

The Army will seize and operate the North American Aviation plant at Inglewood California unless striking workers return Monday. White House secretary Stephen Early said papers are ready for President Roosevelt’s signature but the decision hinges on a CIO meeting the next day. Cabinet approval was reported, and Roosevelt hoped for a peaceful settlement without threats. He also invited AFL Machinists head Harvey W. Brown to discuss the San Francisco Bay shipyard walkout. Machinists seek pay rises to 1.15 per hour and double time overtime, with current wages around 1.00. Labor turmoil continues with lumber workers in Puget Sound cited as a secondary major strike. At Ford’s Rouge plant in Detroit, final assembly halted due to engine shortages amid a production slowdown, while CIO says no slowdown notice. Talks with UAW ongoing as Inglewood talks proceed late.

In Kansas City in June a Federal court sentenced former Democratic boss T. J. Pendergast and aide R. E. O Malley to two years each for contempt over deceiving the court in Missouri s 10 million fire insurance settlement. They had previously served about a year for income tax evasion. The government charged payments totaling 500 000 from a Chicago attorney representing insurers to speed a case in favor of fire companies. The funds were impounded after a rate hike was disallowed and the court later ordered all money returned to policy holders.
