Prime rate cut fails to lift stocks in midday trading
In New York, the Dow dipped to 839.88 at noon after a brief rally sparked by a rate cut from 7 to 6 percent at First National City Bank. The Labor Department reported unemployment at 9.2 percent, damping gains as Trans World Airlines led volume and the NYSE composite barely budged. The market remained choppy with the American Exchange index up modestly to 90.90 and no clear trend emerge.
