The North Carolina House approved Gov. Dan Moore's 23.3 million tax reduction proposal. The measure passed on second reading 84 to 33 and on final passage by voice vote after a 70 to 42 vote to reconsider delaying action to June 19.
Astronaut Edward Givens Jr., 37, a pilot and Air Force major, died when his 1964 foreign compact car left a road near Pearland south of Houston and struck a ditch. He was pronounced dead on arrival at a Houston hospital. This marked the seventh astronaut death in under three years.
In New York the United States and the Soviet Union held a private meeting to break a Security Council deadlock over a UN cease fire in the Israeli Arab conflict. Ambassadors Goldberg and Fedorenko met with council president Danish envoy Tabor as other delegates awaited potential agreement.

Secretary of State Dean Rusk denounces Cairo radio claims that carrier based U.S. Navy planes attacked Egypt as utterly and wholly false. He suggested the accusation was made to create difficulties for Americans in the Near East and urged Egypt to verify with the U.S. ambassador or Washington offices.
In Baghdad and Alexandria mobs attacked American sites in Damascus and Alexandria. Egyptian mobs breached the Alexandria consulate forcing staff to safety while no injuries were reported in Washington. The Baghdad incident damaged an American library and vehicle, with books smashed.
National Guard and police hunted a band of 30 or more armed men in Canjilon and the nearby hills after they shot at Tierra Amarilla courthouse. About 500 troops and 80 officers swept the area as hostages were held and two officers wounded. Reies Tijera Jr. linked to the fugitive group remained a central figure with arrests and Jailed relatives noted.
Israeli forces pushed within 90 miles of the Suez Canal along the Mediterranean coast as Egypt warned of canal closure if ships were hit. Cairo admitted Israeli invasion along the coast and blamed Israel's air strikes for the larger advance. Diplomatic ruptures followed with oil embargos from Kuwait Iraq and Algeria and Lebanon limiting pipeline loading. Israel claimed air superiority and reported heavy Arab losses while expanding across Jordan Syria and Iraq fronts.
U S government sources report Israeli air force struck a heavy blow to Arab air power on the war’s first day, with claims of 374 Arab aircraft destroyed and 161 Israeli planes shot down. Pentagon reports remain sparse as fighting continues.
