North Carolina legislators trim education budget
In Raleigh AP report, the Appropriations subcommittee cut 6.3 million from the education budget to balance spending and revenues. They approved a 77 million general fund, 287 million highway fund, and 69.7 million for capital improvements with 61.5 million possibly going to a statewide bond referendum pending full assembly approval.

Sentencing In Tax Cases Delayed By Judge Stanley
Federal Judge Edwin M. Stanley postponed sentencing for seven defendants who pled guilty to income tax charge indictments to August 31 to let them settle liabilities with the Internal Revenue Service. Names include Carl E. Gaddy Jr and others from North Carolina and Virginia. two attorneys were indicted for failing to file returns. Bonds forfeited and new warrants issued.
