Death of W. C. Cheek Charlotte Insurance Leader
W. Waldo Clayton Cheek 44 president of Skyland Life Insurance and former North Carolina insurance commissioner died of a heart attack in Charlotte. He served as Mecklenburg County Democratic leader and was a potential governor candidate, survived by wife Evelyn King and son Neal King Cheek. Cheek was Randolph County native and Wake Forest graduate. He led Randolph and Mecklenburg Democratic groups, headed Skyland Life after resigning as commissioner in 1953. He became Skyland Life president in 1954 as the firm expanded services.
