Army chief Gen. J. Lawton Collins says up to three more National Guard divisions may be federalized and new regular Army divisions and regimental combat teams could form by June. He notes volunteers and draftees bring the force toward a 1.6 million target with a backlog of trained men.
Rep. Albert Morano traveled to Camp Pickett Virginia to probe complaints of mistreatment in New England's 43rd National Guard Division. Rep. Winston Prouty urged Defense Secretary Marshall to name officers who mocked the division as the cry baby division, amid disputed morale reports.
Democratic Mayor Marshall Kurfees won a two to one victory in the Twin City and carried the party ticket. Greensboro approved ABC stores 11,176 to 6,724 as turnout reached 17,900, a record. Negro areas supported wet measures while textile housing zones remained dry.
A resounding mid session rally lifts stocks with gains up to more than $2 a share. Oils, rails, aircrafts, chemicals, steels and tires show strength as turnover nears 500,000 shares. Farmers in North Carolina waited for a prolonged soaking rain after a dry spell. Scattered showers cooled temperatures by about ten degrees, with Cherry Point near an inch and Elizabeth City Wilmington Charlotte each reporting nearly a half inch. most areas received less than a tenth. Tobacco held up in many locales as growers hoped for more rain to limit drought damage. No rain was forecast for today or tomorrow.
The Army reported that over a quarter of West Point class of 1950 graduates sent to Korea have become casualties. Of 202 second lieutenants, 13 are dead, 30 wounded, 8 missing, and 4 injured, reflecting high casualty rates among junior officers.
The United States delivered a note to Russia demanding punishment for two Soviet soldiers who shot and killed U S Army Corporal Gresens in Vienna on May 4. Washington seeks damages for Gresens family and accuses Soviet authorities of condoning the crime by refusing a joint inquiry.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower made his first postwar visit to Omaha Beach, laid a wreath at St. Laurent Cemetery, and toured Cherbourg and St. Mere Eglise to honor the 1944 invasion’s veterans. He noted Ridgway’s past role and recalled the beaches’ sacrifice seven years after D Day.

Speaking to Washington University graduates in St. Louis he praised a postwar record of courageous decisions in Western Europe Greece and Korea and warned critics to rely on a solid foundation of facts. He cited Ridgways leadership in Korea and noted limited emphasis on Far Eastern policy.
Supreme Court agrees to review a last minute stay of execution for seven Nazi war criminals as they face gallows after three death-row rides and renewed reprieve bids. Wives visit, priests administer last rites, and security tightens around Landsberg prison as the executions loom. The defendants include Oswald Pohl, Paul Blobel, and six others from the Nuremberg trials.
Two escapees from Yancey County prison camp testified they fled to avoid torture starvation and abuse. Harry Caren of Detroit and Bill Beck of Maryland described being starved hung and confined as they faced robbery charges and sought transfer to another camp. A third escapee James Waters died in a gunfight with a guard after attempt.
In Charlotte a 23 year old Negro, Nathaniel Lipscombe, was questioned after a drunken arrest and a bungled reenactment of the May 14 murder of a 26 year old housewife. The victim was slashed in the chest neck and head and her four year old daughter wounded. Investigators doubt Lipscombe evidence and say several persons have been questioned with no solid clues yet.
Seaman Jim Vowell of Bruceton Tennessee flies home from Oakland to spend his last weeks after a brain tumor diagnosed during his minesweeping service off Korea. The 21 year old was awarded a letter of commendation for his conduct in the operation aboard the USS Osprey and now travels with his mother Tessie Vowell and sister Jacqueline to Memphis Naval Hospital for care.
London voices tiredness with Chinese Communist tactics and contemplates a radical shift in policy. A Foreign Office spokesman says Britain may drop effort to invite Peiping to the Japan peace settlement and hints at possible changes in recognizing Peiping versus the Nationalists.
Allied infantry pressed through artillery and mortar fire toward the Chinese Communist iron triangle in Korea. Reports say U.N. gains along a 35 mile front near Chorwon and Kumhwa, with the Reds retreating to the lines they held before their April offensive and preparing for stiff resistance to defend the triangle.
A four engine C-97 crashed on takeoff in San Antonio gutting a filling station and sparking a fire. Authorities reported six bodies recovered with all nine crewmen presumed dead. The disaster left the station heavily damaged and the fate of the remaining three crew members deemed hopeless.
