Democrats Call Budget Cut Drive a Failure
House Democrats denounced the effort to trim the 1948 spending plan as a failure after the House approved a war department budget with $40,000,000 for new planes. The bill totals $5,280,982,423 and goes to the Senate with a net cut of $435,809,077 from the budget estimates. The committee admitted an earlier $280,000,000 error, noting the amount covered in the plane contract authorization and in the $396,000,000 in new cash.

Soup Company Workers End Labor Row
In Philadelphia on June 6 a 14.7 cent per hour wage rise averted a 9,000 worker strike at Campbell Soup after 32 meetings between the CIO union and the firm. U.S. conciliator Peter Manno said a strike would have shut Chicago and Camden plants and disrupted tomato operations for 3,000 farmers. The agreement called the deal the highest wage package in the canning industry.
