Argentina Cuts Cash For Church
Buenos Aires June 4 A high Roman Catholic church fund may be cut as Argentina nears church state separation. The Education Ministry had accused 90 private Catholic schools of defrauding government salaries for nonexistent teachers. Subsidies to the church, totaling about 87 million pesos annually, were tied to those schools. The government delayed salaries for about 900 clergy and halted most May payments. The move follows Peron’s clash with Catholic authorities since last November over political activity. The government also pushed divorce legislation and ended church tax exemptions while abolishing religious education in public schools.
