News from New York reports Charles A Lindbergh Jr will stay with his grandparents Senator Dwight W Morrow and wife in Englewood New Jersey after his first birthday. His parents will fly over the Pacific for a vacation after June 22.
Tommy Armour, the 1927 American Open champion, captured the British Open title at Carnoustie as Jose Jurado faltered late in the final round. Armour finished with a 299 total after a strong last nine. Jurado settled second with 497.
Nashville June 5. The Tennessee House of Representatives defeated the first article of impeachment presented against Governor Henry H. Horton.
North Carolina sues Lola G Harwood, alleging she converted 4903 dollars from March 1929 to March 1931. The state attaches about 3000 dollars in two Raleigh banks and seeks bond for Harwood who lives in Bryson City. The auditor found shortages but no proof of theft. Florida lawmakers pass a bill over Gov. Carlton's veto to permit county optional horse and dog racing with mutuel wagering. Counties must approve by referendum. Tax of 3 percent on machine gross and 15 percent on admissions. Officials estimate $2 million to $4 million yearly for the state.
BRISTOL Virginia June 5 The volume of the gas well on the Earl Ridgeway farm in Scott county nine miles from Bristol was still undetermined today. Telephone communication was lacking and visitors were not allowed near the tract due to gas ignition danger. Attorney Donald T. Stant for Davis Elkins Associates said gas was encountered at 2850 feet with force enough to break the cable and derrick and throw equipment hundreds of feet. Davis Elkins and associates have toiled over two years to locate gas in the area.
Al Capone, reputed Chicago gang leader, indicted by a federal grand jury for income tax violations. Government probe over two years says he owed 215,864 dollars on 1,038,654 dollars gross income for several years.
Nearly 1,000 Naval Academy midshipmen lug sea bags aboard the battleships Arkansas and Wyoming for the start of their annual cruise to European waters. The ships carry 944 undergraduates from the new first and third classes and are to sail for Copenhagen arriving June 23.
Clara Bow plans an indefinite rest at her Nevada ranch after leaving a sanitarium for a nervous strain. She says she feels better and will go to the ranch with her nurse next week to regain vim for a possible return to film work. She did not confirm contract status with Paramount but emphasized a Hollywood comeback if health permits.
The Democratic National Committee filed a quarterly financial statement with the House clerk showing receipts of 41,721 and disbursements of 42,134 for the period ending May 31. Treasurer James W. Gerard reported a balance of 10,441.57, with four loans of 10,000 each from John J. Raskob. Unpaid obligations total 707,054, including loans from the County Trust Company of New York and from Raskob, plus claims from the Postal Telegraph and New York Times for 1924 services and ads.
Two honor prisoners Broadhurst Gadby and Charles Lowery escaped from Cary prison farm near Raleigh. Gadby had a 4 to 6 year manslaughter sentence from Beaufort county. Lowery served about half of a one year assault and rocking a train term from Mc Dowell county. Earlier this week J N Kelly of Philadelphia was shot trying to escape. four youths had overpowered a guard and escaped the day before with one recaptured.
A 100 pound drill pipe blasted from a well after dynamite detonation, flew into the air and struck a car carrying Mr and Mrs Bozarth near Quincy Missouri. Mrs Bozarth was decapitated and her husband slightly injured while returning from a visit with their son at La Grange.
In Arras France June 5 American visiting mayors toured nearby battlefields then returned for city honors and an official luncheon. Mayor George W Coan Jr of Winston Salem NC departed the group and went back to Paris.
Gov. O Max Gardner remained at his Shelby home and did not return to his Raleigh offices as expected. Officials say he likely will not be in his offices before next week though a possible visit to Raleigh is hinted for tomorrow night or Sunday.
More than 1,500 veterans rode in autos and on horses as they marched to Montgomery for the annual reunion. General C A Desaussure and Governor B M Miller reviewed the veterans, with Boy Scouts bearing banners. The Forrest cavalry rode again, and a grand ball capped the event as veterans pledged to meet in Richmond in 1932 for the 42nd reunion.
Dr. A. A. Brill analyzed Abraham Lincoln as a schizoid manic personality, with dual traits from his parents, noting aggressive and sexual humor. The finding sparked protest from Dr. Edward F. Hicks, who called the implications insulting.
