Four black mice blasted aloft in a two stage Thor missile failed to orbit after a 13 minute radio contact. Signals ceased and the craft likely burned up on reentry. The test aimed to return living creatures from a satellite for Project Mercury planning.
In Raleigh the House Agriculture Committee approved a bill giving the State Milk Commission emergency power to set minimum retail and wholesale milk prices to avert price wars. The 29 to 7 vote followed a 400 dairymen public hearing. support came from the State Grange and Farm Bureau which endorsed the measure after earlier opposition. The measure moves to the House floor amid Winn-Dixie dairy plant plans.
Raleigh AP says a compromise over a major court reform issue was worked out as the senate began consideration. Senator Lindsay C. Warren of Beaufort and Senator J Spencer Bell of Mecklenburg, a court reform leader, said they would accept the proposal without opposition.
Joseph Poskonka, branded a Communist 16 years, revealed he was an FBI informer just before a House subcommittee. Neighbors react with hostility while his wife calls it ignorance. Some say his behavior, not the label, fuels isolation. He criticizes The Daily Zgoda for misrepresenting his testimony.
Driving rain and hail up to golf ball size battered western North Carolina on Wednesday. Brevard saw 2.97 inches of rain in an hour with flash flooding and flooded streets. highways queued with water. Statesville logged nearly 4 inches in two hours as hail piled to 18 inches in spots. Ashe County towns reported hail while Brevard crop damage could run into thousands. Iredell and Catawba counties also reported losses. Highway 16 near Went detente saw hail and heavy rain halt traffic. Hickory recorded 1.25 inches and North Wilkesboro about an inch.
In Cincinnati Ohio 7 Kurt Rossmeisl a prisoner of war who evaded capture for 14 years elected to depart the country voluntarily and later seek legal reentry. Judge Mi'ton V Milich ruled Rossmeisl deportable as an immigrant without a valid visa and noted his past as a German army officer.

Mercer cited twenty suffocation deaths among children in four months. Sen C Max Thomas questioned the substitute, calling it inconceivable a housewife would buy a plastic wrapped turkey marked caution.
Washington reports a plan to proceed with both Nike Hercules and Bomarc missiles at reduced outlays. McElroy may seek to keep the programs alive while trimming funding, amid Army Air Force debates and Senate and House disagreements over defense spending and missile range goals.
In Managua Nicaragua increases its armed forces adding 2000 National Guard active troops and 10000 reserve calls amid reports of 75 rebels landing and claims of ambushes. Government invites foreign correspondents to show rebel retreat while pressing OAS for help and an emergency session.
The North Carolina House narrowly approves a bill allowing a liquor election in Gibsonville after a 52-52 tie is broken by Speaker Addison Hewlett. The measure had been defeated 48-46 on third reading before parliamentary maneuvers revived it. Gibsonville sits on Guilford Alamance border with 1500 residents and varied county sponsorship.
At Edwards Air Force Base California a 24 hour delay pushed the X15 glide test from today to Friday. Test pilot Scott Crossfield will control the drop from 38000 feet to a brief 4 5 minute landing at around 230 mph.
Western officials say the United States Britain and France may cut their 10 000 man force in West Berlin if the Soviet Union drops its threat to the city. Gromyko shows elasticity but no clear Khrushchev instruction. Moscow may seek to redefine terms.
Bonn based AP recounts June 6 1944 from a German artillery lieutenant near Avranches who faced overwhelming Allied bombardment. He describes marching with mixed troops and realizing defeat as naval guns roared offshore and radio confirmation came that the invasion had begun. More on page three-A.
