Tax Hike Hurts Tobacco Growers
South Carolina tobacco growers lose an estimated 4.5 million pounds in sales due to cigarette tax hikes across multiple states. R J Reynolds official W Stuart Leake cites about 3.2 million dollars in lost grower and warehouse commissions, plus 1.25 million dollars yearly to remove foreign matter and 250 thousand dollars for sand filtering. Processing last season saw 5,104,855 pounds of sand removed and over 1 million dollars spent selecting foreign material. Dr Hugh C Kiger notes Red China exports significant tobacco since the 1965 embargo, with West Germany importing over 35 million pounds at 25 cents per pound and Singapore about 27 million pounds at 15 cents per pound.

Convention Elects New President
Dr. Carl E. Bates 55, minister from Charlotte North Carolina, elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention on the first ballot over four candidates. Bates formerly led North Carolina and Texas Baptist bodies and chaired a 20 member committee shaping long range plans for seven North Carolina colleges. Marie Grant called him a unifying influence in North Carolina.

SBI Gets Money For Expansion
Raleigh AP report states the 1969 General Assembly funded a one third increase in SBI investigators and more lab staff. SBI Director Charles Dunn warns staffing remains low and crime grows. Dunn cites 891 new investigations in the first four months of 1969 rising to 1,558 this year and lab examinations from 31 604 to 39 174. Convictions rose from 137 to 359 and property recovered increased from 198 198.76 to 332 397 in the same periods.

Unrest at Winston-Salem and Charlotte High Schools
Six pupils injured in a fight between black and white students at a Winston-Salem high school. At a predominantly black Charlotte school a pupil resisted arrest for profanity and a walkout followed. No arrests. windows broken at West Charlotte and a police car. sugar poured in another car. A dispute with an assistant principal led to a scuffle involving a patrolman present on other business. In Forsyth County, 30 to 35 students attacked by whites and blacks caused four injuries and property damage near North Forsyth High School.
