High Point’s Name Tied to Old Rail Route and Highest Point

The name High Point comes from the highest elevation on the old North Carolina railroad between Goldsboro and Charlotte. Survey records from 1851 show stake driving at the high point near the route then chosen for the line. The town later grew where plank road and railroad crossings intersected, prompting a Centennial celebration in July marking 100 years of the community.
