Braganza sails from Kings Bay to join the Italia polar expedition search. Captain Svendsen leads 16 crew plus 15 Italians including Alpine soldiers toward Wilde Fjord with overland plans and dog sled transport. A Norweigian seaplane and radio link aid weather and progress as a second unit arrives.
Raleigh June 2 George Gordon Battle asserts supporters of Governor Alfred E. Smith have sent 6000 into North Carolina since precinct meetings as part of a larger effort by Tammany to overturn Hulls lead. State manager Zez V Turlington says the sum is only a fraction of total funds and vows to counter alleged Smith measures at county conventions June 9. Battle testified before a Senate committee on campaign funds and North Carolina voters repudiated Smith leaders at recent meetings.
In Guilford County the primary produced a heavy turnout with H. A. Mill leading in High Point for two county commissioner seats, while J. W. Burke and Tom Pemberton led the county. W. C. Jones won a seat in the legislature for High Point, with Norman Boren and George Younce securing Greensboro positions. The township constable race saw C. L. Gray prevail, and the total city vote of 657 set a record.

Chang Tso Lin, ruler of Peking and northern China for two years, renounced his authority and departed by special train to Mukden, Manchuria. He left a household party ahead, a guard and retinue in a pilot train, and a city committee of elders to oversee a transfer of control to victorious Nationalist forces amid civil war and Bolshevik threats.
Washington June 2. Republicans head toward Kansas City amid factional strife and rival claims as the convention nears. Hoover’s lieutenants hold about 700 first and second choice votes but need 545 to nominate, while Lowden rises as the main challenger with strong support from midwest and farming circles.
A Reuters dispatch from Peking says foreign forces in Tokyo ordered defenses around legations as nationalist vanguard arrives. American British French Japanese and Italian commanders set positions while Marshal Chang Tso-Li departs for Mukden. Heavy guards guard all entrances to foreign quarters.
