White House reporter Romagna fired amid staff revamp

The White House press office underwent a shakeup as veteran reporter Romagna, 51, was dismissed and replaced by a Washington-based service. West Berlin Teens Targeted at Border by East Guards

Two 17 year old West Berlin girls, Ursula and Karin, were lured toward the East German border by a friendly guard tone and were dragged into Communist territory. Karin was abducted and shot. Ursula escaped bleeding and fled to a West border post. Police report this as the third border shooting in 10 days amid ongoing East West Berlin tension.

Williams lauded by governor after SPA chief dies

Gov. Terry Sanford praised D. Leon Williams, 67, executive director of the State Ports Authority, noting his tenure boosted export import trade by about 50 percent. Williams died in Atlanta of cancer after declining health since February. graveside services were held at Arlington Cemetery, Atlanta. E. N. Richards named acting director as the authority seeks a fulltime successor. Williams previously led Georgia State Ports before moving to North Carolina in 1958.

York Wants To Go Home

World War I hero Alvin C. York, 74, was admitted to a Nashville hospital for tests after internal bleeding ceased. X rays found no cancer or ulcers. he sat up and hoped to return home to Pall Mall, Tennessee, in two or three days, amid an earlier stroke in 1954 and acute illness last weekend.

One Dead Seven Injured In Casar Crash

A four car collision on State Highway 10 near Casar killed Jack Coley Smith 25 and injured seven others. Gilbert Downs 22 of Casar drove a Pontiac into a northbound Chevrolet carrying Hildebran High School students. The accident also involved a 1956 Chevrolet and a Cadillac. Injured include Conley Lowman 17 and others in serious condition. drivers Rex Evan Rhoney 18 and Daniel Cook 16 received minor injuries.
