The crushed body of 80 year old Alexander M. Luke, a Charleston business man, was found in a ravine about 15 miles from Richmond after he reportedly leaped to his death from an airplane yesterday.
Washington reports the Senate approved a compromise on stock market regulation with a presidential debt report and tariff doubts shaping a day of contrasts at the capitol. Shelby NC June 1 C M Fox Western North Carolina organizer for the United Textile Workers called a general meeting of union members in the area for tomorrow. He expected representation from every local in the western part of the state and stated that North Carolina workers would walk out one hundred per cent despite doubts.
Charlotte June 1 The South awaits whether 260000 textile workers will quit machines Monday in response to the United Textile Workers call for a general walk out. Industry leaders doubt a southern shut down while union heads insist workers will strike and pressure non union mills. Some observers doubt the strike’s southern impact citing industry conditions and worker loyalty to employers.
Parole Commissioner Edwin M. Gill said he had no comment on Judge M. W. Barnhill’s recommendation that Lake Lea Jr. be paroled after serving 60 to 90 days of a two year sentence for violating state banking laws. Gill received the recommendation by mail.
Washington on June 1 reports the start of discussions involving John son with George A. Sloan head of the textile code authority. Harry O. King Leon Henderson and Thomas F. McMahon joined the talks as union officials planned further conferences at NRA headquarters to arrange a settlement before the strike slated for next Monday June 8.
Raleigh June 1 Governor Ehringhaus announced the parole of three prisoners and clemency refusals for 20 more. Paroles include Ben Stitt two years in Mecklenburg for assault on a female, Oscar Bare five to seven years in Ashe for manslaughter, and Berkity Sends five years in Stokes for receiving stolen goods.
