North and South fall into three no trump contract

Bridge notes describe a hand where North and South reach a three no trump contract after a misfitting opening by West. East blocks spades, South wins with jack, and the hand proceeds with hearts and clubs leading to a sequence of discards and forced plays. West ends with decisive loss as the play unfolds.

Lady Luck Still Rules In This Slam Hand

A bridge column explains that luck affects results even with sound bidding and play. It describes a grand slam achievable by a squeeze when a club is not opened and outlines the bidding sequence starting with North opening one heart and South bidding two hearts to show support and access to entries.

Bridge bidding and play sequence with four hearts

The bidding reaches four hearts with South as declarer and partner guiding to six. East opens nine of trump, declarer wins ace, leads ten of diamonds, East covers with king, dummy wins ace, then a spade is led and ace wins. All hearts are then drawn except one.

Grand slam squeeze seals trick in a club hand

The declarer manipulates a squeeze ending with East discarding a diamond to unguard a sult. Dummy’s queen and three diamonds secure the hand. A grand slam is made though only four odd should be bid.
