June 1 report from Rocky Mount says Briscoe Davis 22 resident of Nash County was instantly killed when struck by lightning while riding a mule near Whitakers during a thunderstorm. The mule also died.

Morehead City reports Carteret county farmers expect the Irish potato crop to exceed 15000 barrels this year. In two weeks 5000 barrels were shipped at 7 to 8 1 2 dollars per barrel. Eastern farmers focus on sweet potatoes while western growers diversify to stock feed. The county as a whole anticipates about a 350 percent yield increase over prior years. Also announced the State Firemen's association will hold its annual meeting here July 4 25 and 26.
