Otosclerosis causes deafness and new window operation
Otosclerosis is a disease of the inner ear causing gradual deafness often with head noises. It affects young adults mainly women and runs in families. Blocking of the oval window initially causes hearing loss, later nerve degeneration may worsen it. Medical treatment offers no slowing, but a 2½ to 3 hour operation to open a new oval window has shown improved hearing in many cases, best for ages twenty to forty and only for the otosclerosis type.
