Washington July 30 The new 275 million tax bill was approved today by the House Ways and Means committee. Chairman Doughton hopes to bring the measure to the floor tomorrow with possible action by Thursday or Saturday or Monday. The bill follows Roosevelt’s June 19 wealth distribution proposals, raising taxes on inheritances gifts and incomes and adding corporate taxes amid a budget balance dispute. Republican members promise a minority report criticizing the bill as ineffective for balancing the budget.

In Greensboro on July 30 the superior court grand jury returned a true bill against J W Bodenheimer for forgery of two $5.50 checks. Clarence Canada of High Point faced criminal assault charges. C B Montgomery, Negro, received ten years for breaking and entering Maskins Clothing, along with Clarence Beard and Mance Walker each getting three years for the same crime. Julius Stack was arraigned on breaking and entering but case sent to High Point municipal court. L G Jones of High Point received more time to pay a prior fine for assault with a deadly weapon. J E Way filed suit for $10,000 against the High Point Thomasville and Denton Railroad as administrator of O W Way fatally injured on the railroad tracks November 24, 1933, alleging negligence by the engineer.
Mrs. R L Waynick of 1300 North Main Street High Point was slightly injured when her car collided with a Duke Power company truck in Greensboro.
North Carolina newspapers may accept liquor advertisements under an attorney general opinion. Beer up to 6 percent alcohol and natural wines may be advertised like other products. fortified wines and liquors may be advertised only by manufacturers or distributors not selling at a specific place. Ads need not be confined to wet counties. many papers circulate across dry regions. The ruling followed a request from Beatrice Cobb of the North Carolina Press association amid years of prohibition in the state.
