CHICAGO The National Safety Council reported 17,420 traffic deaths in the first six months, a 2 percent drop from 1956. Despite 5 percent higher highway travel, officials credit better driver behavior and stricter law enforcement. The council expects about 1,000 lives saved this year. Of 47 states reporting, 25 showed decreases, 21 increases, and one no change.

Officials report two efforts targeted the new six classroom wing, while the third succeeded in lighting a pile of paper in the old book room. Fire Destroys Large Section of Johnson Street School

A major fire at Johnson Street graded school caused extensive damage to the north and east portions of the old building while the new classrooms remained intact.
