Cornell Physicist Discovers Airplane Heat Prevents Ice
Dr Merit Scott of Cornell has shown that sufficient heat from airplane engines can warm wings to prevent ice formation and may even protect the propeller. In wind tunnel tests with hot air pipes along leading edges kept surfaces above freezing, heat flowed across the wing. Proposals include discharging exhaust gases into the wing at low pressure and routing heat to hollow propeller interiors.
