Stocks Rally as Earnings Rise After Early Decline
New York stocks recovered from an opening drop driven by a Korean truce reaction as steel firms led gains on expected later earnings. U S Steel rose to 78 7 8 and Bethlehem Steel climbed to 52 5 4 while other steel shares posted smaller gains. Theater stocks firmed with National showing turnover. 20th Century Fox led film groups higher. Major rails climbed and Du Pont recovered after a brief dip as investors priced in tax cut news for theater admissions. A later noon snapshot listed many industrials and utilities with modest moves, including General Electric, General Motors, Kodak, RCA and Woolworth among others. In California, a cat gave birth to three sets of twins, a calico mix and two gray and white litters.
