Chicago dated July 27 reports a sweeping heat wave across the northwest and middle America. In the Dakotas and Minnesota temperatures topped 100 degrees with Bismarck at 106 and Aberdeen at 105. A death in Superior, Wisconsin, is attributed to the heat.
Le Bourget France July 27 Louis Bleriot, first man to fly the English Channel, lifted off for Calais en route to England. He rides today in a modern airliner behind a noted pilot, a contrast to his 1909 primitive craft as he repeats the historic crossing.
Samuel R. Boggs a 72 year old former Gideons head is accused of blackmail by Chicago stenographer Sarah Geisenfeld in a Brooklyn Supreme Court suit for 4500. She says Boggs promised marriage and warned her he would reveal their relationship to a fiancé. she seeks back payments and 500 a month for ten years plus 400 expenses. Boggs calls charges false and says their friendship was platonic. He is attending an international Gideons convention.
A powerful quake moved through eastern Japan with Shizouka Namazu Mito and Matsumoto towns reporting shaking. Thousands fled homes as clocks stopped and trains halted amid fear of landslides. The Tokyo Meteorological Observatory called it the year’s strongest seismograph reading with half hour oscillations centered southwest of Tokyo.
Tacoma July 27 Lieut Harold Bromley waits for a favorable weather report to launch his projected non stop flight from Tacoma to Tokyo. Since a test flight Thursday, no technical hurdle arose, but rain storms and head winds along the route have hindered progress and kept the start delayed.
Chicago July 27 grain markets rose as drought worries boosted prices for corn and wheat. Corn climbed about 1 to 2 percent while wheat rose similarly with July at 1.44 to 1.47 and December near 1.55.
Forty five of fifty five persons were jailed in Philadelphia for an unlicensed meeting led by Workers International Relief to aid Gastonia textile workers linked to a fatal police shooting. Agents seized radical literature and notices for a Communist Party event and Youths League gathering. Among detainees was Anna Pennypacker, daughter of the late governor.
In Hong Kong on July 27 Colonel Theodore Roosevelt and Mrs Roosevelt arrived from Saigon en route to the United States. They are accompanied by Harold Coolidge of Boston with many trophies from the Kelly-Roosevelt field museum expedition to Central Asia. Roosevelt says he looks forward to governing Porto Rico and thanks the president for his confidence.
New York July 27 T. V. O'Connor chairman of the United States shipping board was in Memorial hospital today suffering a slight attack of laryngitis. He said his condition was not serious and that he would be out in a few days. He entered the hospital yesterday.
Washington reports budget bureau experts have begun five months of analysis of next year’s $4,000,000,000 federal budget. They will trim costs, reallocate funds, and present figures to Hoover for Congress approval, amid rising departmental expenditures and new programs.
In Paris on July 27 the American duo John Van Ryn and Wilmer Allison defeated Henri Cochet and Jean Borotra 6-1 8-6 6-4 in the Davis Cup challenge round. The win pulls the United States to within one victory of the cup, with France leading 2-1 overall.

A strong quake near Quito on July 27 killed at least 60 and possibly 69. Moyurgu, halfway to Machachi, was largely destroyed with shocks continuing into the night.
