Record Living Costs Rise Again on Food Prices
The June consumer price index shows living costs up 0.1 percent from May with the overall food index at a new high. Fresh fruit prices surged 9 percent largely seasonally, while restaurant meals increased 0.5 percent and grocery prices rose 1 percent from a year earlier. Robert J. Myers of the Labor Department notes July trends are unclear but a small rise is possible. He cites higher labor costs for operators and larger away from home price hikes in tourist centers.
