State Conservation Board Forced To Curtail Program
Asheville July 24 The State Department of Conservation and Development faces severe cuts due to manpower and material shortages. Director R Bruce Etheridge told the board their budget balance of 92122 from a 320258 appropriation could not be used effectively, with key positions vacant and war relief delaying fills. He urged focus on postwar planning as oil rights on state lands were leased to several oil companies for prospecting and departments align with the state planning board on joint projects.

North Carolina plans shift from war to peacetime industry
Etheridge reports the Division of Commerce and Industry is moving from war production to locating permanent plants. Forestry gains emphasis as a renewable timber resource, with new wood products and timber management stressed. Hunting and fishing licenses show unexpected strength, while game conservation projects continue and expand when possible. Mineral exploration gains focus for postwar commercial development, including pegmatites and mica, and state news operations resume with W. P. Share back as manager. Water resources and engineering grow slowly as personnel allow. Waste disposal programs are being prepared with Tennessee Valley Authority and state agencies.
