Government May Set Steel Wage Prevailing Across Industry
Washington July 25 L Metcalfe Walling of the Labor Department predicted a minimum wage on government steel contracts would become the base wage for the whole steel industry. He said the industry would adopt this as the going minimum since companies cannot easily separate workers on government contracts from others. Walling and the Public Contracts Board asked steel companies and labor unions to submit statistics at a hearing to guide fixing the prevailing wage scale under the Walsh Healey Act. The act requires contracts over 10 000 to adopt a 40 hour week pay prevailing wages and ban child and convict labor and enforce standards for working conditions.
